Somethings to consider when booking a true makeup artist are the legal business aspects, grade of makeup and the application process -it will ensure the best results!!
HIRING A LEGITIMATE BUSINSSS
All the credentials in the world are great but if the makeup artist is not a legitimate business you risk more than anyone ever should. Ask them if they are registered through the state, have an EIN and insured. If they answer YES to all the above, you are in good hands - legally. Now the makeup artist may be a sole proprietor, Limited Liability Company or Corporation - that does not m
atter because they will still have a TAX ID NUMBER (EIN) if they are properly accredited through the state and paying taxes. This is important because it upholds contractual agreements that you make between them and shows that the makeup artists/company took the time and money to become not only reputable with you but the state requirements.
Now ask if they have insurance? All reputable makeup artists will carry insurance. Insurance not only covers them but more importantly it covers you! What happens if you have a severe allergic reaction, rushed to the hospital and can’t pay for the medical bills – you would turn to the makeup artist probably in the form of litigation. Hopefully, they have the money to pay you but if not the insurance will cover that aspect. Now you can avoid all these dreary scenarios with one simple question: ARE YOU OR YOUR COMPANY INSURED. Anyone you ever work with from florists to photographers need to be insured.
GRADE OF MAKEUP AND APPLICATION PROCESS
A little bit about my makeup: I always ask my clients if they are allergic to anything prior to the application. I use only the best sanitation practices and 91-99% alcohol. All utensils/makeup are completely sanitized or disposed of between clients. I start with a mini-facial on all my clients while getting to know their skin by asking questions. Then I apply the correct moisturizer and primer- based on your skin type. I always recommend a sweat proof
base such as Mehron for my applicants in June-September or if your prone to sweating/oily skin. I've used this in theater production and on destination weddings in Mexico - it's amazing! Next would be to ensure a perfect foundation match I apply a little amount to the cheek and watch it oxidize (react to your skin's chemicals) to ensure it won't change colors or you have an allergic reaction while I apply your eye makeup. After the eye makeup has been applied, I return to finish the foundation, concealer and powder work or sometimes this process is reversed dependent upon the boldness of the eye makeup. Then I apply lipstick with a sealer. Last, I apply a face sealer such as Ben Nye this locks and sets the Makeup for a fun night of dancing or sweating so it won't budge. All my brides receive samples for touch ups!
